PTC Resettable Fuses

PTC resettable fuses are an important type of fuses used in a wide range of applications. They are a type of resettable fuses with thermally sensitive Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficients (PTCs) inside which causes the fuses to react to extreme temperature changes. The main application of PTC resettable fuses is to protect circuits against over-current and short circuit faults. They are often used in consumer electronics, automotive, industrial and other electronics circuits.

RGEF700-2 Application Field

The RGEF700-2 is a polymeric Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) resettable fuse specifically designed for low voltage applications in consumer electronics, automotive, industrial and other electronics circuits. The maximum rated current of this specific device is 700 mA, with an operating temperature range of -40°C to +115°C. The fuse also has higher fault threshold than other PTC fuses, allowing it to be used in higher current and voltage applications. The size of the RGEF700-2 is tiny which makes it ideal for applications that require small components.

RGEF700-2 Working Principle

The core components of the RGEF700-2 resettable fuse are thermally sensitive Polymer Positive Temperature Coefficients (PTCs). These PTCs increase their electrical resistance with an increase in temperature. When the current flowing through the fuse exceeds its rated current limit, the heat generated by the current exceeds the threshold temperature of the PTC and causes a phase shift between current and voltage. This shift causes impedance to increase dramatically, thus limiting the flow of current through the fuse.

When the fault is cleared and the current level returns to normal, the PTC cools down and its impedance returns to its normal level. This allows the current to flow freely through the fuse again or until another fault occurs. The RGEF700-2 resettable fuse has a memory feature that remembers the predetermined trip level and this is the normal current threshold.

The RGEF700-2 is designed to respond quickly to an over-current situation; it can trip within a maximum of 2 milliseconds after the fault occurs. The self-resetting feature of this specific PTC resettable fuse makes it ideal for applications that require protection from over-current faults that have low power consumption and small circuit size.
