Working Principle

An input voltage is rectified and then delivered to the inductor. When the inductor current reaches the programmed minimum current limit threshold, the device will switch to the P-channel MOSFET to discharge the inductor current. The inductor current regulation loop of the RT8070ZQW is controlled by an external compensation circuit. The phase-shift regulation loop is used to control the accurate output voltage.
Modes of Operation
The RT8070ZQW provides two modes of operations: continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). CCM is used when the load current is greater than the minimum current limit (Ihold), and the inductor current will keep on flowing through each cycle of the switching period. In DCM, when the load current is lower than the minimum current limit (Ihold), the P-channel MOSFET turns off after discharging the inductor current completely.
When the duty-cycle ratio is small and the inductor current is less than the minimum current limit (Ihold), the inductor current would only flow through part of the switching cycle and the rest of the current will be taken by the resistor connected in parallel with the inductor. The VOUT is a function of duty-cycle and resonator frequency, which can be seen as an alternating average. Thus, a precise frequency control is needed to get a precise output voltage.
