Introduction
PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) is an integrated circuit providing the support of multiple voltages and currents in different power domains of a larger chip. Among different PMIC topologies, DC DC Switching Regulators are commonly used to step down/step up the voltage level, increase the power efficiency, avoid unstable voltage level, provide additional ground references and so on.
RT8074GSP is a high performance DC DC Switching Regulator designed by Richtek Technology Corporation. It integrates an adjustable 500 kHz step-down converter with high efficiency, low ripple, and low output voltage accuracy into a small 15-pin SOP package. It is perfectly suitable for low power applications such as battery-driven devices, and it offers high efficiency, low ripple, low output voltage accuracy and other features with wide input voltage range and output voltage adjustment capabilities.

Working Principle
RT8074GSP DC DC Switching Regulator uses a step-down topology based on current-mode control. It adopts an adjustable fixed frequency, internal slope compensation and over-current protection. The device includes an error amplifier, a voltage reference, an oscillator and an on-chip gate driver. The control circuit is powered by a P-channel MOSFET, which is controlled by the error amplifier and a current sense amplifier.
The error amplifier compares the feedback pin voltage with the reference voltage, and then generate the corresponding error signal. The voltage reference outputs a fixed voltage, and its output is the reference voltage for the error amplifier. The oscillator sets the switching frequency and drives the gate driver to turn on and off the MOSFET. The current sense amplifier provides an adjustable frequency slope compensation, and will sense the inductor current and turn off the MOSFET when the current is higher than the pre-set current.
Under PWM operation, the RT8074GSP chip will adjust the output voltage level according to the feedback voltage at the FB pin. A large resistor from the FB pin to ground will increase the output impedance of the error amplifier, resulting in a regulated output voltage.
