DC DC switching regulators (or DC converters) are a type of PMIC device, constisting of a power stage module and a control system. They take input power from a source, like a battery, and convert it to a regulated output voltage, which is then fed to the load. The RT8008-12GB is a DC DC buck regulator that efficiently steps down the voltage of an input source.

Application Field

The RT8008-12GB is a wide-VIN (maximum 12V) and wide-VOUT (from 0.6 to 3.3V) Synchronous Buck converter. It comes with protections, like hiccup-mode Over-Current Protection (OCP), Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and Under-Voltage Protection (UVP). The low quiescent current and light load efficiency of the RT8008-12GB make it particularly suitable for applications like dual-MOS 12V and LiPo battery-powered portable devices, such as drones, tablets and wearables.

Working Principle

At the heart of the RT8008-12GB there is a synchronous buck regulator, which switches the voltage at a regulated frequency and rectifies the output to provide a constant DC source. The synchronous regulator operates by switching two transistors, a low-side and a high-side switch. The low-side switch is always on, while the high-side switch is controlled by the timer, to create an on/off ratio based on the amount of current needed. The high side switch is usually connected to the input voltage source and the low side to the ground, in order to step down the voltage going to the load.

The regulator control circuitry is used to monitor and adjust the output voltage and current, with the help of several functions, such as voltage sensing, current sensing, and loop control. The voltage feedback circuitry monitors the voltage level of the output, and compares it to the target level. When the output voltage drops below a certain level, the regulator triggers an adjustment of the duty cycle to increase the output voltage. The current sensing circuitry, determines the current flow from the output, and sends a signal to the loop control when the output starts to exceed the set current limit.
