Transient Voltage Suppression (TVS) diodes, also known as spike suppressors, are designed to protect components, circuits, and systems against electrical transients, which occur in the form of electro-static discharge (ESD) and electrical over-voltage (EOS). TVS diodes are typically more effective than passive components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors, which are very limited in the amount of transient energy they can dissipate. The SA43CA application field and working principle are discussed in this article.
SA43CA is an ultra-small diagonal chip-scale TVS series, based on the latest silicon proven, bidirectional, surface mountable technology. It protects multiple lines from damage due to electro-static discharge (ESD) and other transient voltage events. The SA43CA TVS series is offered in a complete 0402 and 0603 sizes family. In addition, this series offers a broad operating voltage range from 5.0V to 43V.
Due to its low capacitance and fast response time, the SA43CA is ideal for ESD, EFT, and lightning protection of high-speed data lines. It features superior clamping performance and peak current capabilities up to 41A. It also has a low reverse leakage current and is RoHS compliant.
SA43CA TVS diodes work on the principle of forward biasing, which monopolizes the current flow in one dielectric thus preventing any significant voltage change in the reverse biased diode. The breakdown voltage of a diode specifically defines the maximum amount of reverse voltage it can tolerate. When the applied voltage exceeds the breakdown voltage of the diode, the current flows in the forward direction and is clamped down as specified. Internal parasitic components, such as breakdown capacitance, DNA breakdown, can contribute to the total energy dissipation of the SA43CA device.
SA43CA is an ideal solution for high-speed data lines, telecom, computer peripherals, consumer electronics, automotive systems, and many more. It is suitable for protecting power lines, such as VCC, CC, CFE, PVDD, and PCIE. It is also suitable for use in low-frequency applications, such as battery charging, radio frequency (RF), and smart-edge application.
