Working Principle of SEK220M063ST

The SEK220M063ST is a non-solid aluminum electrolytic capacitor, made of two aluminum foils with a paper separator impregnated with liquid electrolyte, a cylinder body and end plate. The end plates are connected to the anode and the cathode electrodes, respectively.

When a voltage (or potential) is applied on the capacitor plates, the voltage causes the electrons to flow from the anode to the cathode, in a process called electrolytic action. The current flow through the liquid electrolyte causes the electrodes to polarize and thus, a capacitor is formed.

The oxide deposited layers on the aluminum foils also act as insulator, which makes the capacitor self-healing in the event of flashover and also helps maintain the capacitance even at high temperatures. This gives the capacitor stability over time and helps protect the desired circuit from heat, high volts, and any ESD.

The size of the electrical field in the capacitor increases based on the applied voltage, which drives ions to the electrodes and causes a current flow. The more the charge accumulates on the electrodes, the more the dielectric increases. As the opposed charges accumulate on the plates, an electrostatic field is formed and the capacitor stores energy.

When the voltage applied on each plate is equal but opposite in sign, the plates become discharged and the stored energy is released.
