Working Principle
The SG7912AIG-883B voltage regulator is based on a CMOS topology design. It features a low quiescent current (10uA typical) and has a wide input voltage range of 4.5V to 24V. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.6V to 15V. The output current is up to 1A, with high efficiency up to 95%, typical.
It utilizes a simple linear regulation principle, which relies on a voltage divider composed of the series combination of two resistors. When a voltage is applied to the input of the voltage regulator, a portion of that voltage passes through the series combination of two resistors and is then regulated to a stable output voltage. The difference between the input voltage and output voltage is called the “dropout voltage”—the higher the dropout voltage, the lower the output current. The SG7912AIG-883B has an internal reference voltage of 0.6V, which ensures that the output voltage is always regulated at a voltage lower than 0.6V.
The SG7912AIG-883B also features various protection and fault detection functions, such as CSD (Current Sense Detection) protection and thermal shutdown protection. The CSD protection monitors the input voltage and shuts off the output voltage if it exceeds the limits set by the protection threshold. This prevents overvoltage from damaging the voltage regulator’s components. The thermal shutdown protection prevents excessive heating of the voltage regulator and shuts off the output voltage if the die temperature exceeds a certain value. This helps to protect the voltage regulator from thermal damage.
