SG7915K is a 3-terminal adjustable shunt regulator with a wide ranging output voltage capability. It features very low dropout peformance and is specifically designed for use in Notebook and Desktop PCs. This device was specifically designed for use in power distribution and voltage setting applications. SG7915K is a linear type voltage regulator that works by controlling the voltage drop across an active device (transistor) to regulate the output voltage.
The SG7915K is an adjustable positive linear voltage regulator ideal for any application with rail voltages up to 18 Volts. The device features a maximum output current of 800mA and is capable of consuming up to 1.5A of input current. The voltage output range is adjustable from 0.65V to 18V and offers excellent line and load regulation. The output voltage range can be set using a single external resistor. The maximum input voltage range of the device is 18V and it is capable of withstanding up to -40V transient input voltage. SG7915K is designed to be used in DC-DC step-down (buck) and low-dropout (LDO) power converters.
The ideal application field for the SG7915K is in PC based applications such as motherboards, graphic cards, and other peripheral devices where high precision, low quiescent current, and low dropout performance are required. Its adjustable output range enables it to be used for voltage setting, voltage stabilization, current sensitive operation, and gain control. SG7915K can be used in other applications such as DC-DC power supply, battery tender, LED driver, and automotive systems. It features low dropout performance of ≤ 0.6V and minimum output noise of 100mVpp.
The working principle of the SG7915K is based on the use of an active element, typically a field effect transistor (FET) or bipolar transistor, connected across an active resistor. The voltage required at the output is set by the value of the active resistor. When the output voltage exceeds the level required, the active element is turned on and absorbs the excess current, thus reducing the output voltage. Similarly, if the output voltage falls below the set voltage level, the active element is turned off, allowing more current to flow, thus raising the output voltage. This type of circuit is known as a “FET shunt regulator”, and is the same type of circuit used in many other types of voltage regulation such as switched mode power supplies.
Modern linear voltage regulators use a combination of active and passive components to provide superior performance and improved power efficiency over traditional power supplies. In addition to using the FET shunt regulator described above, a voltage reference circuit is added to provide a reference level for the output voltage. This reference circuit is usually comprised of a bandgap reference and a comparator circuit, which compare the output voltage to the reference voltage and provide the necessary feedback and control signals to the FET shunt regulator. This reference circuit also provides automatic shutdown protection if the voltage falls out of range and improves the overall power efficiency of the device.
The SG7915K is an excellent choice for voltage regulation applications that require precision, low power consumption, and low quiescent current performance.
