Transient voltage suppressors (TVS) are devices used to protect components from over–voltage conditions. They are also used to protect against fast, low–energy surge events. The SMCG33CA–HRA is a voltage–clamping TVS which offers an excellent combination of protection, on–state voltage and low capacitance in a small, inexpensive package. These features make it suitable for a variety of applications, including interfaces to high speed bus systems, data processing equipment, instrumentation and power supplies.

The SMCG33CA–HRA is a three–terminal unit that consists of two back–to–back zener diodes, which are connected between its two main terminals. These two diodes are connected to a third terminal. The terminal is usually connected to ground, and it provides the necessary discharge path for the trapped charge if a voltage surge occurs.
