TVS - Diodes - SMCG5650A/TR13 application field and working principle

TVS - diodes are a type of semiconductor device used to protect against electrical voltage surges. The SMCG5650A/TR13 is a TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diode, designed to provide protection against transient overvoltage conditions. It is constructed in a two-terminal, 3-lead SMT (surface mount technology) package, offering a wide variety of applications in commercial and consumer products.The SMCG5650A/TR13 is suitably designed for a variety of overvoltage applications, including power supply, battery charger, automotive, telecom network equipment, computing equipment, cable TV and LAN equipment, as well as other applications. In addition, the device is characterized for both ESD (electrostatic discharge) and EFT (electrical fast transients) protection. The typical circuit required by the SMCG5650A/TR13 consists of a protective resistor in series with the diode, as well as a series connection of a Zener diode and series resistor. The resistor and Zener diode together form a clamp circuit providing the overshoot voltage limitation that is essential for the proper functioning of the diode.The SMCG5650A/TR13 provides the following features in its overvoltage protection:

  • High peak surge current ratings;

The working principle of the SMCG5650A/TR13 is based on a phenomenon known as “avalanche breakdown”. During operation, an increase in voltage across the diode junction causes current to flow into the junction, resulting in an avalanche breakdown of the depletion region. This breakdown in turn results in a current clamping voltage, protecting the device from further overvoltage damage.The device is also designed with an internal element that dissipates no more than 1 watt of power (which is unusual for a TVS diode) when handling the clamp current.
