The diode\'s switching action clamps the voltage between the anode and cathode lines to the reverse breakdown voltage of the diode. When an incoming pulse reaches the diode, the diode\'s Zener voltage is exceeded and the diode switches on, creating a low-impedance path and allowing the transient current to flow to ground. When the transient current is dissipated, the diode reverts to a high-impedance state and the circuit is protected from further transient pulses.
