SMCG6.5A-HR is a type of transient voltage suppressors (TVS) diode. TVS diodes are semiconductor protection devices that retain the voltage level of a circuit by providing an alternate path for high voltages excess. They are often used in situations where a surge is high potential enough to cause major damage to the circuit and devices, such as lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), inductive switching, and power transients. As such, TVS diodes are important components in protecting sensitive electronic equipment.

SMCG6.5A-HR is a silicon avalanche diodes that can be applied in various electronic protection circuitries, with its application field being wide-ranging from power supplies to industrial control and information processing devices. Unlike other types of TVS diodes such as auto-switchable MOVs, SMCG6.5A-HR utilizes very fast response time on its avalanche breakdown feature as its primary working principle, that is, it can immediately breakdown when it reaches the maximum avalanche voltage while continuously suppressing lower surge voltages.

In terms of its specific working principle, SMCG6.5A-HR demonstrates a unique feature, known as avalanche breakdown, which occurs when a potential difference across its p-n junction reaches the maximum avalanche voltage.
