The clamping voltage is determined by the avalanche breakdown voltage of the diode, which is generally specified as the maximum reverse voltage rating.

The working principle of the SMDB12E3/TR13 is based on the junction avalanche breakdown phenomenon. It utilizes a reverse-biased PN junction to limit the reverse voltage. When the voltage across the PN junction exceeds a predetermined value, called as the avalanche voltage, the current in the junction begins to increase exponentially. This rapid increase in current is called as an avalanche or breakdown. This avalanche current is limited by the internal resistance of the junction.
