TVS - Diodes

Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) diodes are semiconductor devices that protect against overvoltage occurring either from external sources or from within a circuit. They are used as protection for sensitive electronic components against damage caused by electrical transients that occur during normal operation or from Electro-Static Discharge (ESD). The SMDJ11 series of TVS diodes are general purpose devices with Uni-directional ESD protection and offer 600W peak power surge capability.

SMDJ11 Application Field and Working Principle

SMDJ11 TVS diodes are mainly used in consumer applications such as computer motherboards, set top boxes, TFT-LCD panel displays, audio equipment, and other electronics. They protect against a variety of electrical threats, including ESD, Electro-Magnetic Interference (EMI), and lightning strike.

The SMDJ11 series features high current and low leakage. It is constructed with a hermetically sealed glass body and is available in SMA, SMB, SMC, DO-214AA, and DO-214AB packages. SMDJ11 TVS diodes have a reverse breakdown voltage of 5-17V.

The working principle of SMDJ11 TVS diodes is based on the Zener effect. The cascade of avalanche breakdown occurs when the reverse voltage reaches the biasing voltage of the diode. This causes the electrical current to be diverted to the electrode-protected components in the circuit thereby protecting them from electrical transients.
