TVS (Transient Voltage Suppressors) Diodes are a wide-ranging class of components which have been designed to protect against electrical transients. They work by absorbing the current and dissipating it in a safe manner, thereby avoiding a costly repair or destruction of a device. Commonly used in industrial, medical, automotive, renewable energy or consumer electronics, TVS diodes provide excellent electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and can handle voltages up to 24kV.The SMDJ160A is a surface-mount, unidirectional TVS diode designed for transient voltage protection, specifically for ESD, Electrostatic Discharge. SMDJ160A is a low capacitance diode, specifically designed for protecting data lines from ESD and other transient voltage threats. It is applied with typical protection of 8kV contact and 15kV air discharge of ESD. It is very useful for industrial, consumer electronics, automotive, and medical electronic applications, which require high levels of transient protection.The SMDJ160A is constructed of a PN junction and a dedicated guard ring Structure. The diode is composed of a PN junction, a guard ring structure, anode and cathode solder locations, lead frame and an internal connection pad. The guard ring structure helps to improves clamping capability by diverting the discharged energy away from the device before it can reach the active device. It also enables the device to handle peak voltage up to 24kV.In operation, the SMDJ160A functions by having an internal PN junction that acts as a Zener diode junction. When a surge or spike in voltage occurs, the PN junction is flooded with excess electrons, which causes the diode to stop conducting and absorb the voltage rather than to pass it on to the protected device. The absorbed electricity is then diverted to the guard ring structure where it is safely dissipated.In terms of speed, the SMDJ160A has a response time of < 1ps. This means that it is capable of absorbing high-level ESD events quickly, preventing any possible sparking or arcing from occurring when subjected to extreme levels of voltage. It is also suitable for high-frequency applications, such as the USB3.0 ports.The SMDJ160A is a low capacitance diode, meaning it has low EMI susceptibility. This means that the device will not have a negative impact on performance when it is exposed to EMI, thus eliminating the need for a filter for EMI reduction.The SMDJ160A is available in a variety of packages, including a new dual-leaded SOT23 package, which is designed to protect two channels from ESD on one board.
