Working Principle

The SMDJ75CA works by clamping the voltage of the transient surge to a safe level before it can reach and damage the sensitive electronic devices. This is done by shunting the surge to ground via a low impedance path. The diode\'s low impedance ensures a high peak pulse current is able to flow quickly, and that the surge is clamped to a safe level.

The diode has an integrated diode-resistor network. When a positive transient voltage surge is applied, the diode-resistor network begins conducting current and shunts the surge to ground. As the surge passes through, the diode network begins to clamp the voltage to a safe level. When a negative surge is applied, the diode-resistor network begins conducting current in the opposite direction and shunts the surge to ground, again clamping the voltage to a safe level.

Upon completion of the transient event, the diode-resistor network automatically returns to its original state and the diode ceases conduction. This feature protects sensitive devices during normal operation from undesired currents.
