At the heart of the circuit lies a switching mode power supply, the STMicroelectronics SLLIMM-nano transformerless series. The switched mode power supply is a full bridge located between the primary and the secondary arm of the transformer, with the main purpose of switching energy between the AC mains and the secondary output. At the mains input, an EMI filter is included to attenuate conducted noise to comply with EN55011 class-B EMI standard. A rectifier bridges diode is also present to rectify the mains waveform.
The power controller STMicroelectronics SLG59M1606V is responsible for regulating the output pressure when the transformer coupled to the SLLIMM-nano is conducting power. During that time, a ripple effect is created at the output of the diode bridge which can cause noise on the power line. To counteract this, an output filter is included at the output stage of the board. When the switching mode power supply is close to the full bridge, the power control switches to the output filter. The filter, which contains a capacitor and an inductor, works to reduce ripple at the output voltage.
Besides the afore mentioned components, the board also features the STMicroelectronics STTH30012W diode bridge to cope with the current commutations and reverse energy flow due to the asymmetrical features of the AC line cycle. Finally, the Output voltage is adjustable between 3.3 V- 6V- 12 V DC and up to 10 A, with a nominal output voltage of 12 V. An on board MCU is also implemented for safety and protection such as remote On/Off, overload and short circuit protection and temperature protection.
On top of safety, the STEVAL-CBL009V1 also features a soft start feature which starts the circuit from zero to maximum output voltage in a matter of seconds. This allows the user to preset the output voltage without having to wait long for the power supplies to reach the necessary voltage. The power supply board is designed for industrial applications and the reliability of a power supply is of utmost importance. That is why the power supply includes a built-in Crowbar circuit, which acts as an ultimate security device in the event of an over voltage causing damage to the system. The STEVAL-CBL009V1 also include a double sided PCB with ground plane on both layers for optimal design and thermal performance.
