The STEVAL-ILL080V1 is an integrated LED lighting driver from STMicroelectronics. This board is designed as an evaluation vehicle for LED driving technologies, including constant current LED drivers and LED control systems. This product is part of a wide range of evaluation and demonstration boards for ST’s analog, digital and mixed-signal ICs, which provide a platform for product evaluation in their application field.
The STEVAL-ILL080V1 is mainly used in LED lighting applications as it is configured to drive constant-current LED drivers up to 6A or three strings of LEDs. With an input supply voltage of 12V DC, it can provide a linear output current between 5mA to 6A, adjustable by a resistor and adjustable LED current setting feature. Additionally, it features protection functions like open circuit, short circuit, over-temperature, under-voltage and over-voltage. It also has an built-in power switch, which enables complete control of the LED lighting via an external logic control to reduce the power consumption of the system.
For a better evaluation, the STEVAL-ILL080V1 board also integrates several control systems for the LEDs, including:
- LED level dimming (non-tracking) – The system is designed to independently control the brightness of each LED string.
- LED level control (local) – This system uses a pulse-width-modulation technique to control the LED level.
- LED level calibration – A calibration process that allows users to set the LED current to the exact values they get from the LED, in order to maximize the efficiency of the LED.
The STEVAL-ILL080V1 uses an advanced system-on-chip technology for LED control and driver systems, STMicroelectronics’ STM32F102RC6 microcontroller. This microcontroller provides a comprehensive and integrated software environment for building powerful and cost-effective LED lighting solutions. It integrates peripherals and interfaces like I2C-bus, PWM-Timer, UART, A/D converter, and SPI-bus, offering significant advantages over traditional solutions and providing the highest levels of driving and control performance.
The working principle of the STEVAL-ILL080V1 board is a standard step-up DC-DC topology, which is based on the concept of controlling the output current of a buck-type boost converter. The main circuit of the board includes the microcontroller and other related components, as well as two external power MOSFETs. The microcontroller controls the external power MOSFETs via two independent pulse-width modulation (PWM) signals – one for the current step-up path, and the other for the dimming signal. These PWM signals control the output current and the level of dimming respectively.
The output current of the STEVAL-ILL080V1 board is regulated by a built-in feedback regulator. The feedback signal is obtained from one of the output terminals by comparing the output voltage to one reference voltage from the output terminal. If this feedback signal indicates that the output current should be adjusted, the on-chip voltage regulator will drive the MOSFETs in order to bring the current to the desired value.
The STEVAL-ILL080V1 board is a versatile tool for evaluating LED controllers and LED driving technologies, and is ideally suited for LED lighting applications such as indoor lighting, street lighting, automotive lighting and decorative lighting.
