STEVAL-ILD005V1 Working Principle
The STEVAL-ILD005V1 evaluation board uses digital phase lock loop (DPLL) technology to maintain frequency stability in a dynamic environment. A digital phase lock loop (DPLL) is an electronic system consisting of two mutually-coupled loops: a primary loop and a secondary loop. The primary loop is the main control loop, which is responsible for sensing the input frequency and adjusting the oscillator frequency to maintain a constant Phase difference between the output and input frequencies. The secondary loop then compensates for any drift over time, keeping the phase difference stable.
The STEVAL-ILD005V1 board utilizes the common architecture of a DPLL to control an analog voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). The VCO output is connected to a reference (input) signal and the phase-locked loop (PLL) circuitry constantly attempts to match the output of the VCO to the input. The PLL adjusts the control voltage of the VCO until it senses that the two signals are in-phase. STEVAL-ILD005V1 Mode of Operation
The STEVAL-ILD005V1 evaluation board can be used to operate the digital phase lock loop in two different modes. First, it can be used as an open-loop mode, where the reference signal is supplied to the board and controlled by the system. The output of the VCO is then used to lock the phase-locked loop in the open-loop mode. This mode is useful for testing the PLL performance dynamically.
