:The STEVAL-ISA010V1 evaluation board from STMicroelectronics is part of their line of evaluation boards in the DC/DC & AC/DC (Off-Line) SMPS category. As far as the working principle of this evaluation board is concerned, the main focus is on power factor correction. Power factor correction is a process wherein a power supply takes the input voltage at varying frequencies and rounds it up to a constant supply voltage at the output. generally, the voltage variations cause the power factor of the AC input to the SMPS to be less than one. This results in increased current consumption, less efficient operation, and decreased power system efficiency.
To increase the power factor, the power supply takes the non-sinusoidal input voltage and provides a corrected output voltage that is in-line with the sinusoidal shape. In other words, it is designed to deliver a desired current waveform, conforming to that of an ideal sinusoidal input waveform. By correcting this waveform, not only is the power factor increased but it also provides efficient operation and increased system efficiency.
The STEVAL-ISA010V1 incorporates ST’s Automatic Half-Bridge (AHB) Zero Current Detection (AHB-ZCD) power factor correction ICs. These ICs sense the rectified line voltage and are used to adjust the timing for the switching of the half-bridge to a sinusoidal wave. This feature eliminates the need for any extra compensation circuits, thus making the system simpler and less expensive. The AHB-ZCD ICs also work to match the load current with the voltage waveform to maximize system efficiency and power factor.
