Thyristors - SCRs

Introduction

A thyristor, commonly known as a static-controlled rectifier (SCR), is a type of solid-state control device that functions as a switch. It is generally used as a power regulator for industrial and domestic applications, ranging from large-scale switching to sensitive variable voltage and power control applications. As a type of gate-controlled device, the thyristor\'s operation and needs depend on the gate current. In addition to this, the power consumed in controlling operation is kept to a minimum.

Application Field

Thyristor SCRs can be used to effectively control power and voltage in both domestic and industrial applications. They can also be used for phase control, phase angle control, and speed control. In more specific applications, SCRs are used in motors and generator protection systems, motor controls, voltage regulators, switched-mode power supplies, AC phase-controlled rectifiers, power switches, solenoid drivers, welding controls and battery chargers, among many others.

Working Principles

In a thyristor SCR operation, a gate current or voltage, determined by the gate terminal, is applied to the anode and cathode terminals, which are connected to a circuit. When the anode voltage is positive with respect to the gate voltage, the gate current flows through the anode and cathode, causing the thyristor device to turn on, and allowing current to pass through the circuit. When reverse gate voltage is applied, the device will turn off. A thyristor SCR will remain in the “on” state until the current through the device drops to zero.

Advantages of SCRs

The advantages of applying SCRs for voltage and power control are numerous. Firstly, SCRs offer high power efficiency due to the low gate current required to turn the device on and off. This translates to a lower cost of operation, since less power is required for the power control application. Additionally, a thyristor SCR’s operation is not affected by noise, and they exhibit less ‘shot noise’ caused by arcing than other power control devices. Finally, due to their solid-state construction, SCRs also feature long life expectancy and higher reliability than other power control devices.

Disadvantages of SCRs

Despite the many advantages of thyristor SCRs, their disadvantages must also be considered. Firstly, a thyristor cannot be used to directly adjust the temperature of a circuit, including the power level. This means that precise current control is not possible when using an SCR. Secondly, since thyristor SCRs consume a large amount of power during turn-on, a surge protector is usually required for proper operation. Finally, SCRs also require a lengthy turn-off time, which can cause a delay before power is cut off from the circuit.
