Thyristors - SCRs: Application field and Working Principle

Thyristors are a special type of semiconductor components, also known as silicon-controlled rectifiers (SCRs). They are widely used in a range of electronic circuits. Basically, these electronic components work as a switch, controlling the flow of electricity in a circuit. They are also used as phase control devices to control the voltage applied to AC circuits and DC switching devices for pulsed power. Furthermore, these components are now being used in various consumer appliances such as televisions, washing machines, and dishwashers, due to their low cost and high reliability.

The working principle of a thyristor / SCR is based on the principle of a two-junction PNPN diode. The semiconductor junction of SCRs consists of four N-type silicon layers, with alternating P-type layers sandwiched between the layer, forming a PNPN diode. From these, the gate electrode is usually attached to the second P- type layer. When the anode to cathode is positive, the gate to cathode is negative, this device then remains off (no current flows). If the gate to cathode bias is reversed (positive), current can then flow between the anode and the cathode.

In other words, the working principle of SCRs can be defined as: When the cathode is more negative than the gate relative to the anode, the device remains off. But when the gate to cathode is made more positive than the cathode to anode voltage, the device turns on and allows current to flow from the anode to cathode.

The advantages of using SCRs include their high efficiency, low power consumption, low losses, fast switching ability, and simplicity of control. Furthermore, they have a wide range of applications, including motor speed control, circuit control, power control, and process control. In terms of disadvantages, SCRs have poor frequency response, non-linear voltage drop, and lack of dynamic control.
