Thyristors - SCRs

A thyristor, or Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR), is a type of electronic switch designed for high-power and high-voltage applications. It is based on the function of a three-layer PNPN device and consists of a gate, main current, and a diode connected in series with each other. A thyristor is an active device composed of four layers of semiconductor material, with the structure resembling that of a semiconductor switching device such as a transistor.The SCR is a unidirectional current controlling device, which means it can control the flow of current if one direction, but it would not do anything in the opposite direction. The current flow through the main current and gate electrodes to the anode terminal is allowed provided the gate-anode junction is forward biased. In normal (opened) position, the gate-anode junction acts like an open switch and the gate-cathode junction acts like an open diode. By applying a certain voltage to the gate terminal, the gate-anode junction conducts allowing the anode current to flow.In the figure below, the SCR is shown in an \'on\' state. The anode voltage and SCR current is shown as a function of time. The anode voltage increases with time and reaches the threshold voltage at which point the SCR turns on. The anode current increases exponentially to a steady state condition. The gate voltage is also shown in the figure. The gate voltage must be higher than the anode voltage because the gate can act like a reverse biased diode.scr-on-off.pngThe main application of SCRs is in high-power control and sensing circuits, such as those in chargers and motor controls. When used in combination with a control interface, thyristors can be used to switch and control the current in several types of electrical circuits.Thyristors are also used in many other applications, such as in voltage regulators, thermal overload protection systems, and in lighting control. They are also used in telecommunication systems for controlling power overall, switching equipment, time delay relays, and pulse looping.Thyristors are widely used in voltage regulators and other power control equipment because of their excellent features, including the ability to control high power, the ability to stop large current flows quickly, and their low cost. Their power capability allows them to control the power flow to and from a variety of electrical loads.Thyristors are also used in low voltage and high voltage applications. Low voltage thyristors are used in AC motor controllers and AC motor drives, in motor speed controls, in temperature controllers, and in light dimmers. High voltage thyristors are used in switchyards, in voltage regulators, in battery chargers, and in some medical applications.In conclusion, the thyristor is a four layer semiconductor device with gate, main current, and a diode connected in series.
