Thyristors - SCRs are solid state devices used in a variety of applications ranging from static control to switched mode power control. They are also used to construct high-power rectifier bridges. SCRs, which stands for “silicon-controlled rectifier,” are rigged so that they may be triggered into conduction once a certain voltage threshold is reached, allowing current to flow and providing a path for electrical energy to pass through.
An SCR operates within two modes of functionality - on and off. When the SCR is off, no current will flow. When the SCR is triggered and turned on, current will flow through it, as long as a minimum voltage threshold is maintained. SCRs operate in three distinct modes within the application field. The first mode is called the holding current. This is the current that flows when the SCR is turned on. The holding current will remain steady until either the load current changes or the voltage level at the anode of the SCR drops below a certain threshold. In this case, the current will also drop according to the level of the load and the operating voltage.
The second mode of operation is called “turn-on” or “gating” mode in which the SCR is triggered into conduction. During this phase of operation, the trigger current is increased until the minimum voltage level required to turn the device on is reached. The higher the trigger current, the greater the voltage required to turn the device on. The higher the trigger current also means that the device will require less power to remain in the gating mode.
The final mode of operation for SCRs is turn-off mode. When the device is in this mode, the current will begin to drop until the base current is zero and the device is turned off. In its simplest form, this is the same principle used to switch devices off in any circuit.
SCRs can be used in a variety of applications ranging from communications to power control. For example, they are used in switched-mode power supplies, as well as in motor control circuits. Additionally, they are popular in power rectifier circuits, which allow them to remain on while controlling the flow of electrical energy.
