Introduction to Thyristors - SCRs
Thyristors (SCRs) are a type of programmable power device — a unidirectional current, or flow of electrons from the positive anode to the negative cathode, can be triggered by applying a voltage to them, and then they will remain “on” as long as current is present, regardless of the voltage. They can also be triggered by a pulse of current when the gate is properly biased and then they will stay in the “on” mode until the current is removed. Thyristors can either be PN junction or double-gate devices. There are many different types and uses of thyristors, depending on the application and working principle.
Application Field and Working Principle
Due to its unique properties, a thyristor can be utilized in a wide variety of applications. In most cases, the thyristor is used to control potential, or voltage, in an application when a desired voltage is being applied. This is commonly used in control systems for motors, lights, and process control applications. The thyristor can be used to control the amount of allowable current, to adjust the voltage for the desired operation, or to turn the device completely off.
The thyristor can also be used in power conversion applications. By controlling the amount of current that flows though a device, power can be precisely and efficiently regulated. This can also be used to adjust the voltage and frequency of a wave to achieve a desired result. In addition, thyristors can be used as part of an isolation circuit that prevents a device from being damaged by electrical surges. Finally, thyristors are often used in order to provide protection against overloads. By monitoring the current, they can be programmed to automatically turn off if the current exceeds the specified limit.
The way in which the thyristor works is based on its internal structure. A PN junction thyristor is composed of a layer of positively charged metallic layers and a semiconductor structure. The positively charged metal layers provide the low-voltage terminals for the device and the semiconductor structure provides the two high-voltage terminals. When a small current is applied to the gate terminal, the excess charge of the positive metal layer is released to the negative metal layer, creating a potential difference between the two layers and in turn initiating the current flow through the device. This current flow is then maintained as long as the current applied to the gate is maintained. Double gate thyristors work in a similar way but with two gates for complete control of the voltage and current flowing through the device.
Thyristors can be used in a variety of applications and are useful in controlling voltage and power in many devices. By using a thyristor to control voltage, current, and frequency, various devices can be accurately and safely controlled. With its wide range of applications, the thyristor has become an important part of many industries.
