When current flows from the positive terminal to the negative, the positive electrode becomes polarised and electrons flow through the electrolyte to the negative electrode. This flow of electrons causes a voltage to be built up across the terminals of the capacitor, and this is the stored electrical energy. When reverse voltage is applied to the capacitor, the reverse current will cause the stored energy to be discharged as a low voltage across the terminals. This process is repeated for each subsequent pulse.
