Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors are constructed from anodes made of aluminum foil with a tissue paper as the dielectric material and the electrolyte acting as the cathode. These capacitors have the highest energy density capacity due to their very high capacitance per volume and is the most suitable type of capacitor for high-frequency AC-coupled circuits. This type of capacitor is often used as the input and output capacitors of DC/DC converters, charging and discharging functions, and energy storage.

Working Principle

The functioning of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on Faraday’s Law of Electrolysis. The Electrolyte in these capacitors acts as the cathode, while the aluminum anode forms the positive ionic charge. When an externally applied electric field is applied, the ions in the electrolyte attracts each other, reducing the electric field near the anode. This reduction of the electric field will cause a decrease in the kinetic energy of the ions. This decrease in energy leads to a buildup of an electrical charge.

The capacitor works by electrochemically reducing the oxide on the surface of the anode and allowing the anode’s surface to build up more charge, resulting in higher capacitance. As the voltage applied across the capacitor comes closer to its rated voltage, the capacitor will reach its maximum capacitance due to the increasing oxide layer formed on the anode.

When the capacitor is charged, the gain of the charge is proportional to the current and the voltage across the capacitor. When the capacitor is discharged, the loss of the charge is proportional to the current and the voltage across the capacitor. This process of charging and discharging will cause the capacitance of the capacitor to decrease as the applied voltage reaches closer to the rated voltage of the capacitor.

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors offer higher energy density than other types of capacitors. They are also available in a variety of sizes, ranging from very small to very large capacitance values. However, they also have lower leakage current, longer life-span, and higher reliability than other types of capacitors.
