The TJA1028T/3V3/10,11 is an integrated low-power physical layer transceiver designed for applications within automotive electronics and industrial control networks. It performs the Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) and Physical Medium Attachment (PMA) tasks for the CAN protocol, including wake-up detection, bit-synchronization, bit-de-synchronization, stuffing detection, loss-of-signal detection and energy detect. The transceiver is mainly used in medium-speed CAN networks, where the highest baud rates can go up to 1Mbps.
The CAN transceiver of the TJA1028T/3V3/10,11 can be easily used in medium-speed CAN applications, since it is extremely robust and offers very high-resolution in terms of data throughput. This device also features a superior immunity to interference, making it ideal for applications that require robust performance in electrically noisy environments. It supports a range of bit rates up to 1 Mbps and is compatible with both single wire (SWCAN) and dual wire (DWCAN) applications.
The TJA1028T/3V3/10,11 provides a wide range of features to ensure fully compliant operation including: wake-up, wake-up filter, noise suppression filter, low-power sleep mode, error counter, voltage surge protection, data transmission monitoring and failure protection. In addition, this device can also be programmed to support extended CAN performance parameters such as bit-rate, time-out and signal out amplitude. The advanced functionalities of this device make it ideal for components requiring fast response times and high accuracy.
The TJA1028T/3V3/10,11 device utilizes a differential bus protocol to transmit data. At the physical layer, the CAN standard defines a differential signal transmitted on the CAN_H and CAN_L line, the signal being inverted on each line. The receiving end of each frame compares the signal on the two line to deduce the actual value. This eliminates some of the problems that may arise from the noise affecting one of the lines. The differential signal allows for longer transmission distances and higher noise immunity when compared with other drivers and receivers.
The transmission and reception of data is accomplished using the wake-up, bit receiving and synchronizing, bit transmitting, error monitoring and CAN synchronization techniques. The CAN controller synchronizes the two lines and provides the necessary timing of data elements required for the transmission and reception of data. During the wake-up sequence the difference between the two lines is measured to detect the start of a received message. On detection, the transmitter will start transmitting data frames on the bus as soon as the data is available. During reception, the transmitter will start receiving data and bit synchronizing the bits on the two lines. The bit synchronization and transmission is controlled by the CAN transceiver.
The error detection and monitoring is accomplished by means of an error counter, which keeps track of the number of errors that have been detected, the time duration of errors and the order of errors. The error counter also detects bit errors such as short wire, open wire and mixed wire. The error counter can also detect bit stuffing errors, which occurs when one or more bit on a CAN message is inserted or removed from the data stream. To handle these types of errors, the transceiver will reject the frame and request a new one.
