The TJA1051T/E/1J transceiver is one of the interface devices available that is used to connect between a high-speed network, such as Ethernet, and an embedded controller in a system. Being from the family of transceivers from NXP, it combines a single-channel transceiver and a low-side switch driver which includes high-speed data rate up to 1 Mbps, and driver capability for load currents up to 2A in fast-switching applications. This makes it an ideal component for applications such as automotive, industrial, consumer, and commercial applications.

TJA1051T/E/1J transceiver is used in networked systems, commonly as an interface component that is in-between the upstream data and downstream data interface or a controller. It mainly serves as an interface component between the low-level data, such as the field intelligence nodes, and the higher-level networked systems such as the cloud. The device not only simplifies connecting the two systems, but also reduces power consumption and improves system reliability.

The TJA1051T/E/1J transceiver is built around two key components: the transceiver block and the low-side switch driver. The transceiver block comprises of an I2C and a digital input/output. This enables the transceiver block to be an interface between the upstream and downstream data systems. The digital input/output can be used as a control input to enable the system after the link has been setup. Whereas, the low-side switch driver is integrated with a P-channel MOSFET that turns the module ON or OFF, depending on the input type.

The operating principle of TJA1051T/E/1J transceiver can be described in three stages, namely initialization, communication and monitoring. During initialization, the device reads the speed and default configurations from the EEPROM on board after the power-up. The communication stage follows where it sets the data rate and then enables the data communication between the two systems. During monitoring, the device continually monitors the communication link, and then takes the corrective measures if required. In addition, the device is able to detect error conditions such as a broken link, power failure and also if any nodes has failed.
