TL5002IDR is a switching voltage regulator controller which is designed by Texas Instruments. It has multiple integrated functions that help in regulating, controlling, and monitoring the switching voltage regulator in DC applications such as portable electronic equipment, automotive, telecommunications, and computer systems. The controller is tailored to offer benefits such as low quiescent current, fast transient response, a dedicated internal PWM controller, many integrated system protection features, precise BL-floating outputs, very tight capacitive loading efficiency, low output impedance, and wide input voltage range among other features.
Application Field
The main application fields of TL5002IDR include automotive, portable electronic equipment, telecommunications, test equipment, and computer systems. This integrated circuit can be used as a synchronous buck pre-regulator controller that provides precise control of the output current or voltage of the switching regulator. It is generally used to step down the output voltage efficiently from a higher input. It can also be used as a synchronous boost pre-regulator or SEPIC controllers to step up the output voltage.
Working Principle
TL5002IDR is designed to provide a very low supply current. It is based on a switching voltage regulator which uses a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique to control the output voltage. The PWM control and the switch on/off control signals are provided by internal circuitry in the form of ground referenced, on/off signals to an external circuit. TL5002IDR also has an internal oscillator for PWM signal generation. The output voltage is controlled by regulating the PWM duty cycle. When the duty cycle of the PWM signal increases, the output voltage tends to rise, and when it decreases the output voltage tends to drop.
TL5002IDR has an advanced output voltage feed-forward compensation feature which controls the output voltage independently of the load and input voltages. This ensures a very fast response and accurate output regulation even with very large load steps. When the output voltage is set by an external voltage reference, TL5002IDR monitors the output voltage and adjusts the duty cycle of the PWM signal accordingly. It also has an adjustable slew-rate control feature which limits the rate of change of the switching frequency. The frequency of the PWM signal can be adjusted to optimize the transient response of the output voltage.
TL5002IDR also provides many system protection features such as the under-voltage lockout (UVLO) function, internal current-limit circuit, and over-temperature protection (OTP). The UVLO feature prevents the controller from operating when the input voltage is too low. The current-limit circuit prevents the output current from exceeding a predetermined value. The OTP feature shuts down the controller when the ambient temperature exceeds a certain threshold. This helps in protection of the controller from damage due to excessive heat.
TL5002IDR is designed for use with external power MOSFETs and Schottky diodes. It is capable of handling input voltages up to 42 V and is available in two versions which provide regulated output voltages at 3.3 V, 5 V or 12 V. It is packaged in a 10-pin SOIC (TSSOP) and is available in a temperature range of –40 °C to +125 °C.
