Data Acquisition - Digital to Analog Converters (DAC) are fundamental to a wide range of applications ranging from audio and video to scientific research, industrial automation and general purpose computing. The Texas Instruments TLC7524CD is a 4-bit Digital to Analog converter (DAC) that is suitable for a wide range of digital-to-analog conversion applications. The DAC provides four output voltages, and can operate from a single supply voltage of 3V to 6V, so it is suitable for applications ranging from low-power to industrial-level applications.
The TLC7524CD DAC comprises four serially connected DAC units, each of which has one triple-high-order-bit register, one current source and one amplifier/output structure. The serially connected units are referred to as the 4-bit DAC, since each unit has four output levels. The 4-bit DAC consists of four single-ended current outputs and one differential output, which is the sum of the four single-ended currents. The DAC can be configured to accept binary input codes (BCD) up to 16 bits and can produce an output voltage up to 16 bits of resolution. Each DAC unit is designed for a specific reference voltage, which is generated internally by the chip and is adjustable via a control pin on the DAC. The adjustable reference voltage can be configured to range from 0V to 1V with a resolution of 1/65535.
The TLC7524CD features a binary logic input circuit and a selectable bipolar/unipolar output drive mode. In the binary logic input mode, the DAC is set up to accept one of two inputs; a “1” or a “0”. The differential input from the output pin is a voltage proportional to the binary code that is provided on the input pins. In the unipolar output drive mode, the output voltage is always positive, the differential output pin is the sum of the four single ended currents, and the output is either 0V or a user-defined level. In the bipolar mode, the DAC converts a positive or a negative differential input into a positive or a negative output.
The chip also features a fast-start-up, low power standby mode and a low offset adjustment pin. The active current of the device is 125μA when operating in a dynamic mode and 0.5μA when in a standby mode. The low offset adjustment pin allows the user to adjust the zero bias of the output to reduce offsets and create the desired output level. The current scaling pin allows the user to adjust the magnitude of the current output and the resolution of the output depending on the application. The device includes a built in temperature compensated auto-zero feature, which ensures consistent results over the full temperature range.
