TLP17A Circuit Protection

Transient Voltage Suppressors (TVS) are components with the capability of diverting excessive static or transient electric current away from sensitive electronic components.

The TLP17A is a type of TVS-Diode designed to protect electronic equipment from voltage transients caused by direct events such as lightning, tire defects, power cross, or inductive loading. It is a unidirectional type whose operating voltage ranges from 5V up to 30V with a maximum capacitance of 10pF.

The TLP17A has three basic parameters: Stand-Off Voltage (Vwm), Maximum Clamping Voltage (Vc), and Reverse Stand-Off Voltage (Vrwm). The Maximum Clamping Voltage is the maximum voltage that the diode can withstand without breaking down. The TLP17A also includes a Thyristor Emission Suppression (TES) circuit to reduce Transient Employee Surge (TES) immunity, which is the susceptibility of the diode to emit undesirable electromagnetic pulses. The TES circuit uses two internal LEDs to absorb the energy of any high-frequency EMI signals that may pass through the diode. It also has an internal EOS (Electrostatic Discharge) protection circuit, which can protect sensitive components from damage by electrostatic discharge.

The TLP17A is most commonly used in applications such as computer peripherals, automotive, and office equipment to protect against voltage switches, ESD/EFT, and lightning transients. It is also used in industrial applications, such as oil & gas, aerospace, and defense, to protect against power cross, overvoltage, and overcurrent transients.

The TLP17A is designed with a multi-stage crowbar circuit that provides for fast response and low clamping voltage. The device has a low dynamic resistance, ensuring an optimal attenuation of transients. It can be used in both series and parallel configurations. When used in parallel, it reduces the circuit\'s response time and allows higher peak currents to be diverted away from the application.
