TVS diodes come in many shapes and sizes and are used to protect electronic circuits or components from fast transients caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD) or lightning. Perhaps the most recognizable type of TVS diode is the TP5KP22CA, which is a bi-directional, stand-off voltage rated diode designed to protect three-line communication systems from voltage transients of up to 5 kilovolts or 8 kilovolts (depending on model).

The TP5KP22CA is available in either the SMD or through-hole format and consists of a pair of back-to-back Zener diodes designed to provide a low impedance, non-linear path for the transient energy. The diodes are encased in a plastic insulating sleeve and have a standoff voltage rating of 4.5kV for the SMD version and 5.5kV for the through-hole package. Once triggered by the voltage or current transient, the Zener diodes begin to conduct the current and divert it away from the circuit, thus protecting the line or component from damage. As the voltage rises further, the breakdown voltage of the device is exceeded and the device is forced into reverse breakdown, thereby limiting the voltage to a safe level. When the current and voltage return to normal the diode is automatically reset and is ready to operate again.

When used in conjunction with other surge protection devices such as gas discharge tubes, the TP5KP22CA is a reliable and effective way to protect signal or power lines from the damaging effects of ESD. The device is widely used in industrial, military and telecom applications where reliable protection from fast transients is required.
