The TP5KP26CA is a matched pair of bi-directional transient voltage suppressor diodes from Littelfuse, Inc. designed to provide enhanced protection for sensitive electronics and other components from voltage spikes. The device’s matched diode pair works together as a thermal protection switch; it eliminates the need for an isolation diode, and has an extremely low leakage.The TP5KP26CA TVS diodes are widely used in a range of sensitive and critical electronic applications, such as power supplies, communications and data systems, relays, amplifiers, wireless antennas, and automotive applications. They are used to protect circuits and components from ESD, EFT, and transients caused by electrical faults, lightning, and other triggering events. The working principle of the TP5KP26CA is fairly simple. When an overvoltage is applied to the TVS, it will rapidly conduct current from the device’s cathode to its anode. This will form a low impedance path between the source and the load, which is a much lower impedance than the path that the surge current would typically take. This creates an effective voltage divider circuit which reduces the surge amplitude entering the protected circuit. The limited breakdown voltage of the diode will clamp any voltage greater than the clamping voltage at a predetermined level, which will protect against further voltage increase. The clamping voltage is determined by the TVS diode’s breakdown voltage. The voltage clamping action is in place during operation and also during fault conditions, which gives the device excellent protection against surges occurring in the forward and reverse directions.The device’s matched pair improves surge protection performance and makes it easier to install in applications that require a certain amount of insulation between the matched diodes. This also reduces the importance of selecting the proper orientation of the polarity of the device for optimum performance. The TP5KP26CA TVS diodes have a reverse breakdown voltage of 5V and a peak pulse current of 5KA. The diodes are able to withstand up to 8KV ESD voltage, and have a dielectric withstanding voltage of 500V AC. The device has a low junction to case thermal resistance of 0.2C/W and a low leakage current of 2uA maximum at 5V. The device also has a fast switching speed of 5V/ns and a low response time. The diode’s high peak current capabilities, low junction to case thermal resistance, and fast response time ensures that it can provide reliable surge protection for sensitive electronics and other components.
