Working Principle

The circuit of the TPS2310 starts with an internal start-up sequence and then does its job of inrush current control. The start-up sequence is based on the Enable pin being pulled high for a minimum period of 30 microseconds and then being released. This reset is done in order to maintain the safety level of operation. Without this reset, very high current may flow in order to charge the output capacitor, potentially damaging the load.

Once the Enable pin is released, the MOSFET switch is turned on while the circuitry monitors the voltage at the output capacitor. The primary goal of the circuit then is to turn the MOSFET off and then on again, based on the capacitance value and the input voltage of the system.

This is done until the output voltage reaches the minimum value of a/2 (where a is typically 5V) and the first peak is suppressed. Then the circuit optimizes the current flowing into the output capacitor and the circuit remains in idle mode until the Enable pin is again pulled high.

The TPS2310 also provides significant protection against over-voltage and it does so by disabling the MOSFET when the output voltage reaches a 2.25 times larger than its nominal value.

The TPS2310 also includes thermal protection and protection against reverse load connection. This protection is provided by monitoring the junction temperature with an integrated temperature sense circuit.

The TPS2310 is also notable for its single-chip solution for board-minimisation and its option for single-supply operation. The small size, low cost and low power features make the TPS2310 an ideal solution for Hot-Swap applications.
