Its 18V absolute maximum voltage rating with an internal power MOSFET, makes it ideal for managing intermediate supplies, such as 12V or 9V secondary rails. The use of an internal power MOSFET also makes this device particularly useful in high current solutions, as it allows up to 12A of continuous current flow. The TPS2320IPWR also supports both manual and auto-start modes; with manual start, the MOSFET is powered once the voltage across the part is above the minimum startup voltage, and in auto-start mode, the MOSFET is powered when the voltage across the part is above the minimum startup voltage for a predetermined time.

The TPS2320IPWR also boasts a wide operating temperature range from - 40 °C to +85 °C, and is suitable for high temperature applications that require extended transistion times. Additionally, the hot swap controller is highly configurable, with two programmable soft-start current steps, as well as user adjustable fault thresholds, making it easy to tailor it to specific customer needs. TPS2320IPWR Working Principle

The TPS2320IPWR is based on a control topology that includes a linear master or load switch, a load current comparator that monitors the load current and drives the load switch, and a voltage sense comparator that continuously monitors VOUT. The load current comparator constantly samples the load current through the load switch. When the load current exceeds the pre-set threshold, the load current comparator triggers the load switch from its OFF-state to its ON-state. The TPS2320IPWR allows for two programmable soft-start current steps; the first step is based on the programmable SSCUR1 current limit, and the second step is based on the programmable SSCUR2 current limit. After the soft-start phase, the load current remains constant until the load current drops below the lower threshold. The load switch will then switch off.

The voltage sense comparator on the TPS2320IPWR constantly monitors the output voltage at VOUT and sets the over-voltage threshold according to the user-programmable OVPHYS voltage. When the VOUT voltage exceeds the over-voltage threshold, the voltage sense comparator triggers the load switch off and the switch remains off until the over-voltage condition is removed. This allows the TPS2320IPWR to provide over-voltage protection for the load.

In addition to providing protection from over-voltage conditions, the TPS2320IPWR is designed to provide protection from excessive junction temperatures. The device features an Integrated Circuit Temperature Sensor (ITS) located behind the load switch. The ITS allows the TPS2320IPWR to shut down the load switch if the chip temperature exceeds the over-temperature threshold set by the user. The load switch will remain in the off-state until the chip temperature drops below the over-temperature limit.
