The TPS24751RUVT is a hot-swap controller designed to provide over-current protection from high-current faults and inrush current associated with insertion of a load into an active nominally 0V supply rail. The device is an efficient generator of inrush current limiting and protection.

Application Field

This device was created for use in high-current FPGA, ASIC, and DDR memory loads, for broadcasting and telecommunications equipment, server and datacenter applications, and other systems such as those found in industrial equipment, energy systems, cloud computing, and more. It can be used to limit fault and inrush currents, detect system power-supply overtemperature, and provide features such as adjustable current limiting and enabling.

Working Principle

The TPS24751RUVT functions by utilizing negative voltages and a small held-off current limit level on the internal current-source’s I-sense pin. The negative-voltage is the difference between the internal V-sense and GND voltage. When the V-sense pin exceeds the set limit, the part will reduce the I-sense pin current until the voltage drops back below the V-sense limit.

When the voltage drops below the V-sense limit, the part will reactivate the held-off current limit level and ramp up the current from the I-sense pin. The internal current source handles the entire load current and facilitates over-current sensing by monitoring the voltage on the V-sense pin.

The TPS24751RUVT output current-limit set point can be programmed directly from the system, allowing load current limits to be optimized for the load, so that when the system is powered-up, no unnecessary current is wasted.

The TPS24751RUVT also provides a protection against system power-supply over-temperature by monitoring the voltage on the V-lockout pin. If the voltage on the V-lockout pin exceeds the factory set level, the device will be Disabled and the hot-swap switch will be turned off.
