Introduction

TPS2592B is an integrated Hot Swap Controller from Texas Instruments. This device is suitable for thermal protection and over-current protection applications. It provides bidirectional current sensing and can detect current in either direction for improved accuracy. The device can also detect the temperature of the MOSFET used in the application and enable over temperature protection.

Application Field and Working Principle

It is a high performance, low cost and current programmable hot swap controller. The device provides bidirectional current sensing, over temperature warning, MOSFET temperature protection, over current warning and fault reporting. In addition to these, the device offers power management and robust fault reporting.The TPS2592B has nine pins, which are VCC, CS, SCLK, SD0, OUT, GND, COM, PWRGD, and SHDN. It has two RTC points, one for each of the the current sensing inputs. The VCC pin is the voltage supply pin and it is used to supply the required power to the device. The CS pin is the Chip Select pin, which is used to enable the device. The SCLK pin is the Serial Clock input and this is used to synchronize the communication with the device. The SD0 pin is the data input pin and it is used to communicate data with the device. The OUT pin is an open drain enable output. The GND pin is the Ground pin and it is used to return current to the ground. The COM pin is the Common pin, which is used to connect the outputs of the two RTCs together. The PWRGD pin is the power good output, which is regulated by the device’s internal voltage regulator. The SHDN pin is the shutdown input, which will shut down the device when it is pulled to a low state. The device is powered by an external voltage supply, either 3V or 5V, depending on the application. The operating temperature range is -40℃ to +85℃. The device has an integrated bidirectional current sense amplifier, which senses the current flowing through the external load. The sense amplifier is connected to the two RTCs, which provide the current sensing data to the device. The RTCs compare the current going through the load to a reference voltage, which is set on the VCC pin. When the sensed current exceeds the programmed limit, the device will enables its internal protection circuits, which will protect the load from excessive current and over temperature. The device can also detect MOSFET temperature and provide over temperature warnings.The device will also provide an over current warning, with an indication on the power good output. The indication will be a low voltage on the PWRGD pin, and the device will stop charging the external load, protecting it from any damage. The device will also report any potential fault conditions to the external system, through the SDO output pin.
