The TSL2591EVM is a compact and low-cost evaluation system for advanced optical light sensing solutions. This board is based on the TSL2591 luminosity sense element, a fully fledged light-to-digital converter based on IR technology. It provides users with the ability to accurately measure and analyze the ambient light spectral energy from visible to infrared (IR) with a spectral resolution of 10 nm. This allows for a well-rounded and comprehensive study of the optical channel.

The board is designed for extremely wide dynamic range of 0.1 lux to 120k lux full spectrum or infrared light measurements. For such measurements, the integrated light-to-digital converter provides an ultra-bright illumination source, ambient light measurement, and IR sensing applications in a single package. The effective measurement range can vary with source/viewing geometry and the spectral responsivity of the sensor. It is designed to maximize resolution and accuracy in a range of sensing applications.

TSL2591EVMs are extensively being used in OLED panel evaluation, automobile rear-view mirror sensing, smart home appliance light sensing, camera flash triggering, motion detection, solar cell testing, and more. The board also supports the popular interfaces including, USB, I2C, and SPI.

The working principle of TSL2591EVMs relies on its light-to-digital converter and the IR technology. The light-to-digital converter comprises two photodiodes placed in series and an amplifier, with the series combined output connected to the analog input of the integrated circuit. A scaled feedback current in the amplifier sets the voltage transfer ratio, thus converting the amplified signal into a digital form that can be read from the I2C interface.

IR technology is also used to detect the intensity of ambient light. This technology relies on the fact that the characteristics of a material depend on its temperature. It relies on two different photo-optic detectors. The first is a single-point detector, which is used to measure the light intensity at a single point; the second is a 2-axis linear detector, which is used to measure the light intensity in two different directions. The output data in digital form reflects the intensity of the incident light. The linear detector outputs are then combined to calculate the spectral response of the scene, or the irradiance on a surface.

By combining the aforementioned light-to-digital converter and IR technology, the TSL2591EVM enables advanced optical light sensing solutions. These devices are highly useful in a wide range of applications, including in ambient light measurement, OLED panel evaluation, solar cell testing and more.
