Optical Sensors - Ambient Light, IR, UV Sensors continue to find a wide range of industrial and consumer applications. The TSL26713FN is an example of a device that integrates infrared (IR) sensing with an ambient light sensor (ALS). It detects total light intensity and also the presence of specific wavelengths, such as infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light.
The TSL26713FN detects ambient light levels from 0.01 to 100,000 lux with a resolution of 1/64 lux. It is made up of an ambient light sensing diode, an infrared sensing diode, and a bandpass filter. These components are connected to an integrated circuit made of protected circuits, control logic, analog-to-digital conversion, and a serial interface. The output is either an analog voltage of 0.0 to 0.9V or a digital serial output of 16-bit resolution.
When a light source shines on the diode, the sensor converts the light to a current. This current is then sent to the integrated circuit. The Protected Circuits use the voltage created by the light source to create a reference signal of the light incident on the sensor. The Control Logic compares the reference and the measurement signals and passes the signal to the Analog-to-Digital Conversion unit. The digital output is then sent to the serial interface, which can be connected to a microcontroller or other external device.
