TVS348SM is a type of TVS diode that is fairly new on the market. Working principle
The TVS348SM is a voltage-controlled bidirectional device. It utilizes the avalanche breakdown of the silicon junction to respond to over-voltage spikes, which are often generated by electrostatic discharges (ESD) or electrical fast transients (EFT). The device is typically implemented in a dual-in-line (DIL) package.
When an electrostatic discharge or an electrical fast transient occurs, the voltage across the device rapidly increases and the avalanche effect triggers the device to conduct current from anode to cathode. This reduces the overvoltage spike, thus protecting the circuit from damage. Additionally, the low capacitance and fast response time of the device ensures that the ESD pulse is removed before it has any opportunity to become damaging. When the overvoltage is removed, the device stops conducting and returns to its normal state.
Due to its small size, the TVS348SM can be easily and efficiently implemented into circuit designs, with minimal board layout modifications needed. It can also be used in conjunction with other protection circuits, such as TVS diodes, to create a multilayer protection structure, which offers comprehensive ESD protection.
