Working Principle

As soon as these charges reach the depletion region, they are immediately cut off due to the potential barrier set up between these two regions. As the applied voltage increases, after a certain threshold, this barrier will get depleted and will allow the current to flow through it. This Zener voltage across the diode is termed as the breakdown voltage and it is the same for all the components irrespective of its current.
