Diodes - Zener - Single - TZX12D-TAP Application Field and Working Principle

The TZX12D-TAP, known as the Transient Voltage Suppressor (TVS) diode, is a component of the Zen diode family whose purpose is to detect and protect physical and electronic equipment from electrical impulses caused by faults or unrelated electrical spikes. It’s been mainly designed for non-isolated sensitive circuits, but it also can be used for RDS-on applications.

The TZX12D-TAP is used for power-supply stop surges, signal line suppressors, logic line suppressors, applied across inductive load and motor drive suppressors. It’s designed to interact with traditional zener TVS diodes, allowing for different levels of protection. The TZX12D-TAP has a high-run current combination, a low-capacitance and a maximum rating of 1.6kV. Moreover, it has current surge capabilities with a low working voltage, a maximum clamping voltage of 16V and thermal stability with a working temperature of 130 degrees Celsius. Its setup configuration also comes in various package sizes for easy adaptability to various electronic components.

In terms of installation and working principle, the TZX12D-TAP should be connected in parallel to the circuit which is to be protected. This way, it will provide an extra path for current during an electrical impulse. When overvoltage passes through the device, due to the internal breakdown voltage of the diode, current is diverted through the diode, thus insulating and protecting the main circuit. The working principle is simple – during the pulse, the TVS operates like a short circuit, clamping the transient voltage and dissipating the high spike power. This prevents damage to the main circuit, providing effective protection.

Apart from that, the TZX12D-TAP also has a fast response time – it’s capable of responding to high voltage transients in less than 5 nanoseconds.
