Working Principle

UC3823Q contains two pulse-width modulation (PWM) controllers and an error amplifier. The two controllers are used in a complementary drive circuit to provide full-wave rectified output voltage. The current mirror generates output voltage and current feedback to enable the pulse width to be modulated, which in turn keeps the output voltage and current stable.

In the UC3823Q, the peak current (Ipx) is determined by the voltage at the COMP (compensation) pin and the voltage at the SS (saturation sense) pin. The COMP pin voltage is provided by the current loop compensation circuitry, which ensures that the peak current gets clamped at the same level every cycle to maintain stability. The SS pin voltage is set externally by the user to determine the peak current.

When a duty cycle is greater than 50%, the output voltage is equivalent to Vin-Vout and when the duty cycle is less than 50%, the output voltage is equivalent to Vin+Vout. The duty cycle therefore, is dependent upon the difference between the input and output voltages, and the peak current (Ipx) is determined by the voltage at the COMP pin and SS pin.

In addition, the UC3823Q features a frequency adjust pin. This pin provides the option of varying the PWM frequency to optimize efficiency and achieve low noise operation. It is adjustable via an external resistor. The UC3823Q can also be used as a variable frequency drive (VFD) controller.
