Integrated circuit chips have been integral part of electronic system designs due to their high level of integration thereby realizing advanced systems in less PCB area and cost. The UC3853NG4 is a high performance, monolithic integrated circuit that combines current mode PWM and PFC (Power Factor Correction) capabilities.
The UC3853NG4 combine asynchronous current-mode pulse width modulator and a ripple regulated two-level diode-capacitor multiplier (DCM PFC regulator) that interfaces directly with a line rated rectifier. The flexible architecture design allows this device to cover both offline and online AC line applications. It support PFC stage from 50 to 300 Watts, voltage range from 85 to 305 VAC and up to 200kHz switching frequency.
In an AC line powered system, active PFC circuit is often used so as to meet EMI and energy efficiency requirements. During normal operation, the AC line supply is rectified and the PFC stage processes it further to reduce the power loss associated with the switching section and to comply with the EN 55022 Class B EMI Limit. An optimal solutions is to develop an integrated solution that combines the current mode PWM, PFC and line regulation. This is exactly what the UC3853NG4 device offers.
The success of any PFC circuit depends on two main components; the power front end (PFE) composed of a rectifier and associated components, and the control circuit. The UC3853NG4 control IC integrates the control circuit of the DCM PFC in a single device, eliminating the need for additional components and reducing the design complexity. The PFE portion of the circuit is still required, but it can now be implemented in a very small form factor.
The UC3853NG4 works in current mode. The device senses the average current though the current sensing resistor Rsense. The peak current command depends on this average current and is used to set the on-time of the switching P-FET. The high level of integration and on-chip algorithms are designed to reduce the design effort while providing a robust solution. Other features such as Onboard Overload Detection and Clamp, Undervoltage Lockout, Soft-Start and Internal slope compensation provide an optimized solution.
The UC3853NG4 offers several advantages over similar devices in the market. The most important features are the high current limit accuracy and lack of oscillation or hunting when regulating the output power. Also, the input current remains near sinusoidal with THDI near to 10 percent under a wide range of loads.
The UC3853NG4 device is a highly integrated solution with a wide range of applications.
