UC3842BD is a fixed frequency current mode PWM controller, which is designed for off-line and DC-to-DC converter applications. Working Principle
UC3842BD uses a fixed frequency current mode PWM control to regulate the output voltage. It utilizes a feedback loop to detect the output voltage and regulates it based on the programmed instructions. It uses two internal comparators to achieve current mode control. The first comparator monitors the voltage of the output voltage and compares it to the reference voltage. The second comparator monitors the inductor current of the output voltage, and compares it to the reference current.
The output voltage is regulated according to the voltage and current comparator voltages. When the feedback loop detects a drop in the output voltage, the current mode is activated and the controller outputs a high PWM signal. This PWM signal causes the power transistors to turn on, which allow current to flow through the inductor and increase the output voltage. Once the output voltage has reached its setpoint, the controller will then turn off the power transistors and maintain the output voltage by controlling the PWM signal.
UC3842BD also has a Soft Start feature that reduces in-rush current on power-up. This feature slowly increases the PWM duty cycle until the setpoint voltage is reached, increasing reliability and reducing power consumption. The controller also has a built-in current-limiting feature that helps protect the circuit from over-current conditions, preventing damage to the load or power supply.
