UC3847N is a pulse width modulation controller designed to work in a variety of DC-DC switching regulator applications. The device is an integrated circuit consisting of current mode control with an on-chip driver stage to drive a power switch. The driver consists of an on-chip pulse transformer and a drive circuit which is optimized to drive the power switch of the switching regulator. It also offers a high degree of protection against over-current, over-voltage, and short circuit faults.

UC3847N\'s application fields mainly include general purpose, high-performance PWM controllers intended for switch mode power supplies (SMPS) and other power regulating applications, such as DC-DC converter, DC-DC off-line converter, DC-DC step-down or step-up converter, PFC boost pre-regulator, and active clamp forward converter. Another common applciation for UC3847N is in the form of Converter Control Pulse Generators (CCPG) for motor drives applications including fans, pumps, and conveyors.

Although UC3847N offers various user configurable features, its primary operation mode is current-mode control. It uses a linear combination of a voltage reference, voltage error amplifier and a ramp signal to regulate the output duty cycle. In current mode control, the duty cycle is regulated by charging and discharging an external capacitor (dynamic impedance compensation) with a single current source and sampling the voltage across the capacitor.

The UC3847N requires the user to select an external ramp generator, the current source for charging and discharging the external compensation capacitor, and an external error amplifier. In addition, the order of these components along with various other design parameters must be carefully considered to achieve optimal system performance. The user must also provide an external power switch such as a MOSFET or IGBT and the design must take into account the response time, turn-on voltage, and peak current of the power switch.

Proper layout of the components is also essential in order to reduce noise and voltage surge. Once designed and implemented, the UC3847N can provide a high degree of protection against fault conditions over a wide input voltage range and deliver error-free operation across varying load conditions.
