The UC3854N is a high performance power factor correction (PFC) controller IC most suitable for Power Line conditioner products and Active Power Factor Correction applications. It is designed to regulate power factor, correct power line distortion and reduce harmonics.
The UC3854N operates in a critical conduction mode allowing it to achieve a unity power factor at all power levels. It also provides high precision voltage and current regulation, as well as adaptive line feedforward and adaptive voltage feedforward that compensates line and load variations, resulting in improved current-sharing over the devices in the system.
The UC3854N is an integrated PFC controller which includes a few functional components such as an internally trimmed comparator with programmable over current and over voltage protection, a high speed current source, an error amplifier with hysteresis control and an enhanced loop compensator.
The working principle of the UC3854N can be divided into three parts: power factor correction (PFC) mode, current source control loop, and voltage feed-forward control loop. In PFC mode, the input power is detected and compared with the peak AC voltage that is set by the voltage reference. Once a discrepancy is detected, a suitable gate drive signal is provided to the PFC stage to adjust the input current and output voltage to achieve desired power factor. The current control loop is used to regulate the current through the power switch. It is a feedback loop which compares the output of the current sensing circuitry with a set point and adjusts its output level until they match. The last part is the voltage feed-forward control loop which monitors the line voltage and adjusts the current regulator accordingly.
