UC3879N (Advanced current mode PWM controller) is a control integrated circuit application field and working principle specifically designed to be used in DC to DC converter systems. It is a part of STMicroelectronics’ family of advanced current mode PWM controllers and it is ideal for applications requiring low EMI, excellent line and load regulation, fast transient response and low cost. Its advanced current mode architecture provides fast line and load regulation, it ensures minimum output ripple over load and line and it eliminates output ripple due to the nonlinearity of the device. The UC3879N is a highly integrated and cost effective controller circuit that can be used for various dc-dc converters. It features an adjustable signal to noise ratio and precision current sense, which are highly advantageous for use in dc-dc converters. In addition, the UC3879N features a wide range voltage and current capability, allowing advanced current mode architectures to provide high line and load regulation and fast transient response. It also eliminates noises due to the non-linearity of the device, further reducing noise and ripple in the output. The UC3879N is ideal for applications requiring low EMI and excellent line and load regulation, fast transient response, and low cost.
The UC3879N works under two basic operation modes; continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). In CCM, the diode always conduct current and the inductor output current always remain above zero. In DCM, the diode will not be conducting in each conduction period except when the output voltage exceeds its maximum specification. The switching frequency in both modes is defined by the current sense amplifier where the inductor current is compared to the output of an internal reference voltage. The internal reference voltage can be adjusted depending on the output voltage range. The U3879N is also capable of providing over current and over voltage protection via the built-in soft start mechanism and current sense amplifiers.
The UC3879N is designed to provide fast transient response with excellent line and load regulation. It also ensures that an output voltage ripple remains as low as possible while providing efficient power conversion. It can be used in a wide range of applications including DC to DC converters, motor drives and SMPS applications.
