PMIC (Power Management IC) - Hot Swap Controllers are specialized power management controllers that are used in a variety of applications to protect mission-critical components by providing robust overcurrent protection, as well as controlling inrush currents when power is applied to a circuit or system. The UCC39151DPTR is a high-frequency, high-efficiency, double-ended hot swap controller for a variety of Vcc (analog and digital) and VTT (CPU core voltage) applications, such as server, storage, networking, and telecom applications.

Applications

The UCC39151DPTR is specifically designed for use in hot-plug environments, where components and/or entire systems are being installed, removed, and/or replaced without disrupting power to the remainder of the system. In addition to protecting components and/or systems by providing robust overcurrent protection, it also ensures compatibility of power supplies and components by providing tight regulation of output voltages during insertion or removal of a component or system.The UCC39151DPTR also allows for fine-tuning of slew-rate of inrush current as components and systems are connected and disconnected, making it ideal for protecting sensitive components or systems, such as CPUs and memory, from electrostatic discharge (ESD) events.

Working Principle

The UCC39151DPTR utilizes a three-phase bridge to respond to the variations in the applied power. The bridge is connected to a two-pin status feedback mechanism that reports the presence of power and the amount of current passing through the removed component.The primary power switch is also connected to the bridge and is opened and closed in response to the applied current to protect the component being removed or inserted. Sensing circuitry monitors the voltage, current, and temperature and provides a status indication back to the system and component.The UCC39151DPTR also contains a PWM controller that allows the bridge to be used as an "inrush prevention" circuit, which limits the amount of current that flows into and out of the system when power is first applied or when a component or system is removed.
